Wheeler edges out Holy Spirit in Overtime Thriller

Wheeler continues to make statements on the road

Atlanta, GA– After going to Norcross and taking care of the Blue Devils at the On the radar Tip-off Classic, Wheeler High School went to Swats to face off against nationally ranked Holy Spirit in the Under Armour Hard In The Paint Give Back Classic! With all the big names in town this weekend, Wheeler and Holy Spirit decided to stay up a little longer and put on a show!

We predicted this back in September and now everybody thinks 2019 Anthony Edwards is the best basketball player in the country.  Known for his exciting dunks and athleticism, Edwards opened up his bag of tricks and displayed all the layers to his game. Edwards showcased his ability to utilize screens without the basketball, create shots off the dribble, and score from the midrange.  Including back to back three-pointers late in the fourth quarter. With the help of 6’9 F 2019 Ahmir Langlais (12 points, 4 blocks, and 8 rebounds), the Cougars were able to force an overtime after 2020 G DeAndre Brown hit a three-pointer at the buzzer (11 points).

Already battle-tested, Wheeler High school countered with their ball movement and defense.  Denver Commit 2019 Jaire Eastmond’s (6 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists) helped spread the ball around which helped 2019 Charles Smith IV get off to a fast start. Smith was on fire from downtown with four three-point shots made.  2019 G Kenny Burns’ answered the call for Wheeler nailing big shot after big shot, finishing with 18 points. Smith led Wheeler with 21 points but it was the inside play of 2019 Malachi Rhodes (14 points, 9 Rebounds). Rhodes was huge for Wheeler on both sides of the floor. He finished with two blocks and was a difference maker in the paint despite a 22 point night from Holy Spirit’s Edwards.

In overtime, Wheeler would put the game away with free throws and defense.  Burns and Eastmond would make clutch free throws to edge out Holy Spirit 76-68 in the overtime thriller.

Holy Spirit’s 2019 6’1 G Michaiah Jeremiah was a solid on-ball defender with 5 steals. Wheeler High School’s 2020 G Prince Davies hit key shots down the stretch for Wheeler. Davies finished with 11 points.
